Filthy Casual Saturday Nights
Starting in the New Year we will be running a new event Saturday Nights.
We’ve labeled it “Filthy Casual” Saturday Night.
What is a “filthy casual” you may ask. Well if you are a magic player and you have to ask you probably are one.
As defined by the urban dictionary: “Filthy Casual” is a term used to negatively describe a gamer who only plays casual games, or a game in any genre that requires a low level of commitment.
I for one embrace my “filthy casual” status and accept that I play magic for the sheer enjoyment. So if you hang out with friends and play fun games of magic this is the night for you.
Now for the details
Stat Time every week will be 7pm and Cost will be $2
Prizes of boosters and promos are given away randomly because winning doesn’t matter this night.
These will be unsanctioned events and up to 12 proxies will be allowed in deck construction.
Formats will include all the following:
The Commander format is all about picking your hero and building a deck around them. In this casual, multiplayer format, you choose a legendary creature to serve as your commander and build the rest of your deck around their color identity. We use the banned list at MTGCommander.net for deck construction.
This is a format where decks only consist of only common cards. Players can use Gatherer to ensure cards are common in rarity to build a minimum 60 card deck. The following ban list will be used for these events:
- Cranial Plating
- Frantic Search
- Empty the Warrens
- Peregrine Drake
- Temporal Fissure
- Treasure Cruise
- Cloud of Faeries
- Goblin Grenade
- High Tide
- Hymn to Tourach
- Merchant Scroll
This format is similar to pauper except players are allowed up to 5 uncommons in their decks. We will use the rules and banned list from mtg-peasant.com for these events
Full Metal Budget
Full Metal Budget is a specialty format with extra deck building restrictions based on card cost. The format is designed as an interesting and exciting challenge for deck builders and players alike.
The format uses the Legacy banned list with two additional clauses:
1 – No card in the deck can be worth more than $4.
2 – The entire deck must total to $40 or less.
The cost restriction will be based on the StarCityGames prices. The price of each card will be considered the lowest regular printing for that card (ie: the lowest price in a regularly released set, excluding specialty releases such as duel decks, Commander precons and promotional cards). Basic lands add no additional value to the deck.
Sideboards are permitted in this format, but note that sideboard cards must also follow the pricing restrictions, and your deck cannot go over the $40 limit even after side boarding.
Frontier is a casual constructed Magic: The Gathering format that allows expansion sets and core sets from Magic 2015 onward. The frontier format thus encompasses all cards that have been printed in a core or expansion set using the M15 card frame. There is currently no banned list.
Modern is a constructed format that allows expansion sets and core sets from Eighth Edition forward. The modern format thus encompasses all cards that have been printed in a core or expansion set using the modern card frame. Modern has an extensive banned list but for these events will will not be using it and will let players do as they like.
We will occasionally do sealed events which may incur a greater cost depending on product used.
As a “filthy casual” not all events can be one-on-one play. Most will be multiplayer variants. These will include:
- Two-Headed Giant
- Other Partner Events
- 3-5 player Free-for-Alls
- Ricks Random Multiplayer Mayhem(my own secret chart of multiplayer games)
Watch the event schedule to see what format is playing each week!
